The ERA4Health programme is a European partnership that aims to improve public health by coordinating and funding transnational research across Europe.

Full Name: Fostering a European Research Area for Health

Primary Goal: Address European public health needs through transnational collaborative research and funding

Key Focus Areas:

  • Cardiovascular diseases;
  • Nanotechnologies for health;
  • Nutrition and lifestyle-related diseases;
  • Public health strategies

Duration: 7 years (2022-2029)

Key Participants: 37 organizations from 24 countries, including research funders and ministries

Programme Objectives and Approach:
ERA4Health is designed to have a tangible impact on health and healthcare systems by:

  • Supporting relevant medical research in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
  • Improving the use of existing health technologies in everyday clinical practice.
  • Building capacity for conducting large-scale, multinational clinical studies initiated by researchers.
  • Implementing Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) practices across all projects.

The programme is implemented in two phases, starting with joint calls on specific topics and potentially expanding to support larger clinical studies.

This Project is funded by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII), Spain’s main public funding body for biomedical and health research, through the Strategic Action in Health (AES) under the Internacional Collaboration Projects call AES-2023 (project reference AC23_2/00045).

The funding is linked to the European Partnership for Fostering a European Research Area for Health (ERA4Health), within the ERA4Health-Health Equity programme, and is co-funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme (Grant Agreement Nº. 101095426)

ISCIII: The Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) is the main public funding body in Spain dedicated to biomedical and health research. It is an autonomous public research organisation attached to the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, and it plays a central role in strengthening the Spanish National Health System through research, innovation, and international collaboration. The ISCIII also ensures compliance with national regulations, open science principles, and ethical and legal requirements applicable to publicly funded health research in Spain.

The Netherlands

ZonMw promotes and funds health-related research and innovation in the Netherlands. Its main goal is to improve the quality of care and health services, as well as the health of individuals in the country. ZonMw primarily focuses on medical research, healthcare innovation, and the implementation of evidence-based practices.
